This 7 day / 8 night self-drive tour will take you through the best of the Western and Eastern Cape in search of natural wildlife and colourful cultures. This adventure starts in Cape Town and ends in the Addo National Elephant Park, the home of the Big 5.

On this self-drive road trip through 14 towns, you’ll experience the breathtaking expanse of the Little Karoo and winelands, the lush forests and serene beaches of the Garden Route and the wild untamed nature of Tsitsikamma and the Addo Elephant National Park.


You will travel in your own vehicle with your own group of family and friends, and your personal virtual guide will keep in touch with you via calls or messages throughout your tour. Your accommodation will be booked for you and your breakfast will be organised each morning, ready when you start the day. We'll suggest the best places to eat each day, the best views to stop at, and book any extra adventure activities you feel like doing along the way.


This tour includes eight nights accommodation in our favourite hand-picked spots, all breakfasts (plus one free!), and 3 must-do activities including an ostrich safari in Oudtshoorn “the ostrich capital of the world”, entrance to the Tsitsikamma National Park and a guided safari game drive in the Addo National Elephant Park to see the Big 5. You'll end your tour in Addo or PE, where you can either fly home or drive back to Cape Town.

Pro Tip: During high season (Nov, Dec, Jan, Feb) accommodation in the Western Cape gets booked up quickly, so if you'd like to tour during these months, book with us a few weeks in advance.

After arriving in Cape Town and picking up your rental car, head to your accommodation to check in, after which the day is yours to relax by the pool or explore the beautiful mother city. Your virtual tour guide will recommend the best places and sights to see, and will help you arrange them. Before you enjoy dinner at one of our recommended restaurants, your support guide will give you a quick briefing to explain what you can expect from your upcoming tour. **** INCLUDED: Accommodation for tonight; guide on standby to recommend things to do and to book them for you.

DAY 1 - Cape Town to Montagu

It’s time to leave the Mother City behind, and take to the open road to find adventure, diversity and fantastical creatures. With your support guide watching over you from afar to help and give you tips every step of the way, with your info pack in hand, and your locations punched into your GPS, you’ll make your way along Route 62, the world’s longest wine route, and into the small farming town of Montagu. We have some recommended stops for you on the way, and the chance to shape your own experience with extra addon activities, like mountain climbing, wine tasting, river cruises, bike tours and “instagramable” photo stops. Finish the day off in Montagu town, with some beer tasting while meeting the locals, or just relax and enjoy the views while tasting the different wines you may have bought along the way. **** INCLUDED: Breakfast in Cape Town; accommodation in Montagu or surrounding area for tonight.

DAY 2 - Montagu to Oudtshoorn

Wake up to breakfast and the sounds and smells of the Little Karoo. You can explore the town and its history this morning, before greeting the famous Route 62 again, armed with our official Route 62 playlist recommended by your virtual guide. Along the way you’ll have time to explore the little towns of Barrydale, Ladismith and Calitzdorp as you make your way to Oudtshoorn, the “Ostrich Capital of the World”. Your info pack will show you some recommended photo stops and lunch spots along the way, and if you have any questions about the area and its fauna and flora your virtual guide will be ready with a unique response. If you arrive in Oudtshoorn with some daylight to spare, try out some optional extras like the Cango Caves tour or museums and hikes in the area, before heading to the most famous sunset spot on Route 62 and then dinner at a “secret restaurant” with traditional, local menu options. DAY 3 - Oudtshoorn to Knysna

Enjoy a relaxed breakfast before you head out to your first included “must see” activity - the ostrich safari - where you’ll spend some time getting to know the world’s largest flightless bird and discover how the ostrich industry put Oudtshoorn on the map. After this you’ll take to the road again in search of the coast and the lush indigenous forests of the Garden Route. Your info pack will contain some recommended stops along the way, as well as an optional extra adventure worth experiencing. Then take a short drive to the beautiful town of Knysna to see what it has in store for you. **** INCLUDED: Breakfast in Oudtshoorn; ostrich safari activity; accommodation in Knysna for tonight.

DAY 4 - Knysna

Spend the day in the old coastal town of Knysna - a town with a rich history of gold rushes, forest elephants and the wood cutters that encountered them. Enjoy a hike in the luscious afromontane forests, browse the local craft markets or try some famous fresh Knysna wild oysters. If you’re feeling adventurous, there’s the option of an ocean safari in search of whales, dolphins or seals. Your info pack will recommend the top spots to see and restaurants to try, and your guide will be ready to answer any questions or requests you might have. We recommend you end the day off with a sunset cruise on the lagoon to the iconic Knysna Heads, before heading to dinner at a “local secret” restaurant for the freshest seafood in town. **** INCLUDED: Breakfast in Knysna; accommodation in Knysna for tonight.

DAY 5 - Knysna to Crags/Tsitsikamma

Leaving Knysna, you’ll head forth on a journey towards the gentle giants of the Addo Elephant National Park. On your way your first stop will be the Tsitsikamma National Park where you can explore the magical forests in every shade of green, and brave the famous suspension bridge. You can also choose to hike to the breathtaking waterfall situated on the first stretch of the Otter Trail. There are loads of optional extras to keep you busy in this park, such as kayaking through deep canyons, snorkelling in wild waters and hiking. When you’re done, drive through to the cute little village of Storms River to explore a bit before checking into your accommodation for the night. Feel free to say “howzit” to Marilyn Monroe and Elvis if you see them, and try some locally made craft beer from the brewery down the road. **** INCLUDED: Breakfast in Knysna; entrance to the Tsitsikamma National Park; accommodation in the Tsitsikamma area for tonight.

DAY 6 - Tsitsikamma to Addo

Enjoy a hearty breakfast while you relax to the sounds of the forest around you, after which you are free to explore the area or go ziplining through the forest canopy, or head to Bloukrans if you’d like to try the world’s highest bridge bungee jump. From there you embark on your journey towards Addo, watching how the vegetation changes as you cruise through the final stretch of the Garden Route and into the Eastern Cape. You can stop stop off to see the famous surfing town of Jeffrey’s Bay and maybe try a surfing lessons if you’re keen. Your info pack will recommend some great shopping spots to get a good deal on some surfwear. From there it’s off to the greater Addo area where you can check into your accommodation and enjoy a beautiful sunset. **** INCLUDED: Breakfast in Tsitsikamma; accommodation in the greater Addo area for tonight.

DAY 7 - Addo

As you wake to the sounds of lions nearby, or the calls of the elephants, sit down for breakfast in a scenic setting and get ready for an adventure-filled day. It’s time for your third included “must see activity”: a guided safari through Addo Elephant National Park. Your guide will escort you through the park, and show you the best places to see the Big 5. From there you can either head back to your accommodation and relax by the river, or go canoeing. Otherwise feel free to jump into your car and take another drive through the park. Enjoy one last night at your accommodation before heading back into civilisation the next day. Note: The Comfort package includes a half-day game drive.
